Frequently asked questions

Everything about how SMBToolbox tests and scores small-business and freelance tools.

How do you review and score business software?
We go through each app's plans, pricing, features, and documentation, drawing on years of working with businesses on the tools they run on, then rate it 1 to 5 on ease of use, features, value for money, and support. The score at the top is simply those four averaged onto a ten-point scale.
Are your reviews independent, or can a vendor buy a better score?
Independent. Affiliate income keeps the site running, full stop. No vendor sees a score in advance and no vendor has ever changed one.
What are the four pillars behind a business-software score?
Ease of use asks whether an owner with no IT help can get it running. Features asks whether one app finishes the job or you end up paying for two. Value looks at the real bill once a second and third person need a seat. Support is the docs plus how quickly you reach a person on a bad day.
How often are reviews updated?
Small-business software changes its pricing tiers more often than its product. We revisit a review when tiers, limits, or core features move, so the score matches what you would pay for today.
Do you earn money from the links on this site?
Yes - some links are affiliate links and may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. The disclosure page explains exactly how.
Can I suggest an app for you to review?
Yes, please - the contact page goes straight to us, and reader requests jump the queue more often than not.
Can I leave my own review or comment?
Yes. There is a discussion section under every review, comparison, and guide, and another owner's experience is often worth more than our score.
