Tenable Review: Enterprise Scanning at an Enterprise Price

Tenable sells enterprise vulnerability scanning, and it prices like it. Nessus Professional is listed at $4,790 for one year on the vendor's own product page, checked October 14, 2026.

This is a documentation review. Every figure below comes from Tenable's own product pages, its editions comparison table and its legal page, all read on October 14, 2026.

The short answer: this is a strong fit for IT consultants, MSPs and security contractors who bill scanning back to clients. It is a poor fit for a five-person business looking for a cheap security checkbox.

Reasons to consider it

  • A published price, not a sales call. Nessus Professional and Nessus Expert show dollar figures on the page rather than a "contact us" form, which is rare in security software.
  • Depth behind the scanner. The Nessus product page states coverage of "117 K+" CVEs across "319 K+" plugins, with "100+ new plugins released weekly," checked October 14, 2026.
  • Multi-year terms shave a little off. Three years of Nessus Professional is listed at $13,637.54 against $14,370 for three one-year licenses, a difference of $732.46 by our arithmetic.

Reasons to pause

  • The free tier is not for business. Tenable's own comparison table marks Nessus Essentials and Essentials Plus "Non-commercial use only," with Essentials capped at 5 IPs.
  • No subscription refund terms are published. Tenable's legal page carries site terms and a privacy policy, with no refund or cancellation policy linked, checked October 14, 2026.
  • The entry price is a real commitment. $4,790 a year works out near $399 a month by our arithmetic, before the $400 support add-on or any training.

What Tenable actually sells

Tenable is not one product. The site navigation lists exposure management, AI security, cloud security, OT security, vulnerability management, identity security, patch management, attack surface management and web app scanning.

The flagship is Tenable One, described on the homepage as an AI-powered exposure management platform. The hero rotates between messages; our capture on October 14, 2026 showed "Bringing the power of Mythos to Tenable One."

Most small buyers never reach that platform. They arrive for Nessus, the scanner Tenable has shipped since 1998 according to the Nessus Professional page, and which it sells in four editions.

Those editions are Essentials, Essentials Plus, Professional and Expert. Essentials and Essentials Plus are free or low-cost and non-commercial. Professional and Expert are the licenses a business can legitimately run.

Separately, Tenable sells the same scanning as a cloud subscription called Tenable Vulnerability Management, priced by the number of assets rather than by the machine doing the scanning.

Two 2025 analyst placements are named on the homepage: leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Exposure Assessment Platforms, and leader in the IDC MarketScape for worldwide exposure management. Both are vendor citations, not our assessment.

Who it fits, and who should skip it

The fit question here is not about features. Nessus will scan almost anything. The question is whether the license can be expensed against work that pays for it.

  • IT consultants and MSPs who scan client networks and rebill the license, the same group served by our best software for freelancers guide.
  • Penetration testers and security contractors who need unlimited IP scanning from a laptop rather than a hosted console.
  • Small firms under a compliance obligation — PCI, SOC 2, cyber-insurance questionnaires — where a named scanner satisfies an auditor.
  • Agencies and dev shops shipping client sites, where Nessus Expert's web application scanning covers code you are contractually responsible for.
  • Businesses with regulated client data already paying for hardened tooling such as StartMail for encrypted email.
  • Operations teams with 100 or more tracked assets, where Tenable Vulnerability Management's per-asset model starts to make more sense than a per-seat scanner.

Who should skip it

  • Businesses of under ten people with no compliance requirement. At $4,790 a year this is likely the largest line on a small software budget, dwarfing the project management tools and accounting stack around it.
  • Anyone expecting a usable free plan. Essentials is a 30-day license for 5 IPs, marked non-commercial, with a 30-day delay on plugin updates.
  • Buyers who want to pay monthly. Terms are sold in one, two and three-year blocks, with no monthly option published on the Nessus pages checked October 14, 2026.
  • Teams whose real exposure is documents and inboxes, not servers. Access hygiene across QuickBooks Online, monday.com and shared PDFs usually matters more first.

The free tier is a 30-day, 5-IP, non-commercial license

Nessus Essentials is free, and it is the figure most buyers remember wrongly. The product page describes it as a 30-day license covering unlimited vulnerability scanning for up to 5 IPs.

It is explicitly not for work. Tenable's comparison table lists "Non-commercial use only" under Essentials, and the page states the license is "for personal, educational and non-commercial purposes only."

The restrictions go further. Essentials carries a 30-day delay on plugin updates, no compliance or configuration checks, no reporting, no data export, no Live Results and no technical support.

Nessus Essentials Plus sits between the two. It raises the scan limit to 20 IPs, restores real-time plugin updates, adds basic PDF and HTML reporting and year-long data retention — still non-commercial.

Tenable describes Essentials Plus as costing "a low annual cost" but does not print a number on that page, checked October 14, 2026. Verified students and instructors can get a free one-year license through the Nessus for Education program.

One caution about the vendor's own documentation. The Nessus FAQ page still states the free tier covers "up to 16 IP's," while the Essentials product page says 5. The two pages do not agree, and the product page is the newer figure.

Budget on the smaller number and confirm the limit inside the account before you rely on it. This is the same pattern our note on how to read a SaaS pricing page was written for.

How the pricing is structured

Tenable publishes list prices for the Nessus editions, which is more than most security vendors do. The following figures come from the Nessus Professional and Nessus Expert product pages, checked October 14, 2026.

Nessus Professional: $4,790 for one year, $9,330.95 for two years, $13,637.54 for three. It covers unlimited IT scans and is the edition marked "For commercial use" in the comparison table.

Nessus Expert: $6,790 for one year, $13,208.13 for two years, $19,304.19 for three. The $2,000 annual gap buys web application scanning, infrastructure-as-code scanning and external attack surface assessment of 5 domains per quarter.

Two add-ons sit under both: Advanced Support at $400 for 24x365 phone, email, community and chat access, and on-demand training from $275 for one person for a year, rising to $385 for the advanced course.

Tenable Vulnerability Management is priced by asset. The buy panel lists 100 assets at $3,500 for one year, $6,825 for two and $9,975 for three — $35 per asset per year on the one-year term, by our arithmetic.

Tenable Web App Scanning is listed at $3,578 for 5 FQDNs, which is $715.60 per web application per year by the same arithmetic. It is included at no extra cost with a Vulnerability Management subscription, per the product page.

Multi-year savings are modest. Three years of Vulnerability Management at 100 assets saves $525 against three one-year terms, roughly 5%, which is the same discount shape as the Nessus licenses.

The price on the page is not the price everyone sees

One detail worth knowing before you open the buy panel. Tenable's price widget applies local tax, and it does so without warning beyond a small footnote.

Our capture of the Nessus Expert panel, taken on October 14, 2026 from outside the United States, rendered one year as $7,469 rather than the $6,790 published in the page itself.

The same multiplier hit the add-ons: Advanced Support displayed as $440 instead of $400, and the Nessus Fundamentals course as $302.50 instead of $275. A "*VAT incl." footnote sits under the panel.

US buyers should see the list figures quoted above. Buyers elsewhere should expect the panel to recalculate, and should check the number at checkout rather than the number they remembered from the product page.

What Tenable publishes, and what it does not

Tenable is unusually open about its scanner's internals and unusually quiet about its commercial terms. Both matter when you are signing a three-year license.

On the open side, the Nessus page publishes a precise accuracy claim: "the industry's lowest false positive rate with six-sigma accuracy" at ".32 defects per 1 million scans," checked October 14, 2026.

That is a vendor claim published without a methodology beside it. We did not measure false positive rates ourselves and have no way to verify the figure. Treat it as a stated specification, not a benchmark.

On the quiet side, trial length. The Nessus pages offer a free trial but do not state how many days it runs. The evaluation form mentions a 32 IP limit during the trial.

The one duration Tenable does publish is for upgrades: existing Nessus Professional customers can "upgrade to Nessus Expert free for 7 days," per both Nessus product pages checked October 14, 2026.

Refunds are the bigger gap. Tenable's legal page lists a privacy policy, site terms and an accessibility statement. It notes that "additional terms and conditions may apply to purchases" without linking them.

So the cancellation and refund rules for a $13,637.54 three-year license are not readable before you buy. Ask for them in writing from Tenable or your reseller, and keep the reply.

We also could not read independent ratings. G2, Capterra and Gartner Peer Insights all returned 403 errors to our requests on October 14, 2026, and Tenable's Trustpilot profile is unclaimed with zero reviews.

Where a user rating is missing from this review, it is missing because the source would not open, not because it was left out.

How it sits next to the tools reviewed on this site

SMBToolbox has not published a scored Tenable entry, so the honest comparison is against the tools already reviewed here rather than an invented ranking.

On budget, Tenable is in a different class. A year of Nessus Professional costs more than most small businesses spend on their entire back-office stack for a one-person business.

For distributed teams, the practical first step is usually access control and device hygiene rather than network scanning. Our best tools to run a remote team guide covers that ground.

For document security, a signed and permissioned PDF workflow through Foxit PDF Editor addresses a leak path most small firms actually have, at a fraction of the cost.

For people data, an HR platform such as HiBob concentrates the sensitive records a scanner never sees, which is where small-business breaches usually start.

For financial exposure, bookkeeping access is the account worth hardening first. Compare the options in QuickBooks Online vs FreshBooks, or read the FreshBooks review on its own.

And if this review has mainly taught you to read contracts more carefully, our SurveySparrow review walks through a renewal clause that only appears in the terms of service.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tenable free for small businesses?

No. Nessus Essentials is free but limited to 5 IPs for 30 days and marked "Non-commercial use only" in Tenable's comparison table, checked October 14, 2026. Commercial use starts at Nessus Professional, listed at $4,790 a year.

How much does Nessus Professional cost?

$4,790 for one year, $9,330.95 for two years and $13,637.54 for three, per the Nessus Professional product page checked October 14, 2026. Advanced Support adds $400 and on-demand training starts at $275.

What is the difference between Nessus Professional and Nessus Expert?

Expert adds web application scanning, infrastructure-as-code scanning and external attack surface assessment of 5 domains per quarter. It is listed at $6,790 for one year against $4,790 for Professional, a $2,000 annual gap.

How much does Tenable Vulnerability Management cost?

The buy panel lists 100 assets at $3,500 for one year, $6,825 for two and $9,975 for three, checked October 14, 2026. That is $35 per asset per year on the one-year term by our arithmetic.

Can I get a refund if I cancel a Tenable license?

Tenable does not publish a refund or cancellation policy on its public legal page, checked October 14, 2026. The page says additional purchase terms may apply without linking them. Request those terms in writing before paying.

Is Tenable worth it in 2026?

For consultants and MSPs who rebill the license, yes — $4,790 a year is defensible against billable scanning work. For a small business with no compliance requirement and under 20 machines, the cost is hard to justify.

Bottom line

Tenable is a serious scanner sold at a serious price, and it is honest about the price, which already puts it ahead of most of its competition.

The free tier is the part that misleads small buyers. Five IPs, thirty days and a non-commercial license is an evaluation, not a plan. Budget for Nessus Professional or do not start.

Before signing a multi-year term, get two things in writing: the refund and cancellation rules, which are not published, and the final tax-inclusive price for your country.
