Checkr Review: Fast Background Checks, Unpredictable Bills

Checkr sells background checks by the report, starting at $29.99, and you can open an account without a sales call. The number on the pricing page is not the number on the invoice.

This is a documentation review. Every figure below comes from Checkr's own pricing page, small-business page, passthrough fees overview and services agreement, all read on November 3, 2026.

The short answer: Checkr fits small employers hiring drivers, in-home staff or hourly workers who need a report back quickly. It fits badly if you need to know the total cost before ordering.

Reasons to consider it

  • Published per-report prices. Basic is listed at $29.99, Essential at $59.99 and Complete at $94.99 per report, visible without a sales call, checked November 3, 2026.
  • No minimum to start. The small-business page states you can "Run pay-as-you-go screenings with no contracts or minimums," checked November 3, 2026.
  • It plugs into tools small teams already run. The same page names Gusto, Rippling, BambooHR, Intuit QuickBooks and Greenhouse among "200+ ATS and HRIS" integrations.

Reasons to pause

  • Every package price carries an asterisk. The footnote reads: "Standard third-party court and database access fees may apply, passed through at cost with no markup." Those fees are not quoted up front.
  • The services agreement is a one-year term. It "is effective for one (1) year from the Effective Date" and renews annually unless cancelled 30 days before expiry, checked November 3, 2026.
  • No refund clause is published. The word "refund" does not appear anywhere in Checkr's services agreement as read on November 3, 2026.

What Checkr actually sells

Checkr is a consumer reporting agency, not a database you search yourself. You order a report on a named person, the candidate consents, and Checkr pulls records from courts, DMVs and third-party databases.

The homepage calls it "The AI-powered verification platform for high-stakes decisions," split into six lines: Workforce, Mortgage, Tenant, Trust, Personal and Insurance.

Small employers only touch Workforce. That is the hiring product, sold in three published packages plus an Enterprise tier priced by sales.

The other lines are separate businesses with separate prices. Tenant reports start at $24.99, mortgage employment verification is listed at $59.95, and a Personal profile is free, per the pricing page checked November 3, 2026.

One recent change is worth knowing. A banner across the homepage on November 3, 2026 read "Checkr acquires Truv," the income and employment verification company behind much of the mortgage product.

Checkr publishes several company-scale figures on its homepage: "140K+ businesses already run on Checkr," "260M+ real identities mapped, covering 96% of US adults" and "+60 NPS." These are vendor claims, printed without methodology.

Who it fits, and who should skip it

The fit question is about what you hire for, not how many people you employ. Checkr prices per report, so a two-person company pays the same list price as a two-thousand-person one.

  • Businesses hiring drivers or delivery staff, where the $9.50 motor vehicle record and the $14.50 commercial MVR with CDLIS search are the checks that actually matter.
  • Home-service and in-home operators — cleaning, pet care, trades — the same buyers served by our best software for freelancers picks.
  • Hourly employers with real turnover, who already run scheduling through something like Homebase and need screening to keep pace with it.
  • Teams already paying US payroll, since the small-business page names Gusto and Intuit QuickBooks as pre-built integrations.
  • Anyone running a structured hiring pipeline, where an applicant tracker such as Breezy HR triggers the check instead of someone retyping names.
  • Growing companies with an HRIS, where cleared candidates land in HiBob rather than a shared spreadsheet.

Who should skip it

  • Employers who need a fixed cost per hire. Court and DMV passthrough fees are added after the report runs, and Checkr's own tool calls its figures estimates.
  • Anyone hiring mainly outside the United States. International Basic starts at $32 per check and International Professional+ at $124. A contractor platform such as Deel covers that ground differently, as our Deel vs Gusto comparison sets out.
  • One-person businesses with nobody to screen. The money goes further in the back-office stack you actually use daily.
  • Buyers who will not read a services agreement. The commercial terms and the marketing page do not say the same thing, as the section below shows.

The three published packages, and what each leaves out

Checkr publishes three workforce packages. The difference between them is how deep the criminal search goes, not which features you unlock.

Basic, $29.99 per report. SSN trace, sex offender registry, global watchlist search and national criminal search. No county search, which is where most US criminal records actually sit.

Essential, $59.99 per report. Adds identity verification and unlimited county criminal search. Checkr marks this one "Most Popular," and it is the first package that reaches county courts.

Complete, $94.99 per report. Adds unlimited state criminal search and federal criminal search. Federal records do not appear in county or state searches, per Checkr's own add-on description.

Each price is labelled "Starting from" and each carries the asterisk. Read the $30 gap between Basic and Essential as the price of a usable report, not as an upsell you can decline.

Enterprise is quoted by sales. The page lists automated adjudication, 200+ ATS integrations and customized workflows against it, with no number attached, checked November 3, 2026.

Add-ons are where a $29.99 report stops being $29.99

The package is a floor. Most of what small employers actually want sits in the add-on list, priced per check.

  • Identity verification, $4.99 per check — already included in Essential and Complete.
  • Motor vehicle record, $9.50 per check, plus state DMV access fees that vary by location.
  • Employment verification, from $12.50, rising with lookback: $15 for three years, $25 for five, $35 for seven, $50 for ten.
  • County civil search, $40 per check, and social media search, $29.99 per check.
  • Continuous criminal monitoring, $1.70 per individual per month — the only subscription line on the page.

Drug testing is the line most likely to catch a first-time buyer. The add-on summary shows "Starting from $10/test," while the detailed entry prices clinic-based tests from $60 and onsite tests from $37.

That $10 is the random-selection fee, not a test. A $90 after-hours fee also applies when a test runs Monday to Friday between 7pm and 7am, or at the weekend.

Record-filtering tools are tiered as well. Assess Lite is included, Assess Standard is $2.49 per report and Assess Premium is $4 per report, per the pricing page checked November 3, 2026.

Compliance paperwork carries its own lines: Postal Adverse Action at $7 per letter, Form I-9 at $7 per form. Neither is optional if your jurisdiction requires it.

Editorial arithmetic, not a Checkr quote: an Essential report with an MVR and a three-year employment verification lists at $59.99 plus $9.50 plus $15, or $84.49, before any passthrough fee.

No contracts or minimums, beside a one-year agreement

This is the thing to check before you sign up. Two Checkr pages describe the commitment differently, and both were live on November 3, 2026.

The small-business page says: "Run pay-as-you-go screenings with no contracts or minimums, so your costs scale with your hiring needs." A second block repeats "no contracts or expertise required."

The "no contracts or minimums" claim on Checkr's small-business page, captured from checkr.com on November 3, 2026.

The services agreement reads differently. It "is effective for one (1) year from the Effective Date" and renews for further one-year periods unless a party gives 30 days' notice before expiry.

It also contemplates minimums. Terminate early and "any minimum commitments or platform Fees that would have otherwise been due during the Term of such Order, shall become due and payable."

Both statements can hold at once. A self-serve account with no signed Order is charged per report; a signed Order can carry a term and a commitment. The marketing page never draws that line.

Billing for signed Orders is monthly: an invoice after the close of each calendar month, then an automatic charge to your payment method. Undisputed late amounts carry 1.5% per month.

And there is no refund clause. The word "refund" does not appear in the services agreement as read on November 3, 2026, which matters the day a report is ordered on the wrong person.

If contract language is the part you normally skim, our note on how to read a SaaS pricing page is written for exactly this failure.

Passthrough fees are the real variable in your budget

Passthrough fees are what courts, DMVs and third-party databases charge to release a record. Checkr passes them on "at cost, with no markup," and notes no provider is exempt from them.

That is a fair description, and Checkr documents it better than most. Named examples on the page: the Pennsylvania PATCH database at $22, employment verification database fees of $17.95-$119.95, education verification fees of $3.95-$50.00.

DOT verification sources run $7.00-$70.00. Canadian MVR fees are listed province by province, from $0.00 in Alberta to $20.00 in New Brunswick, checked November 3, 2026.

The practical consequence is simple. A $59.99 Essential report on a candidate with address history across three fee-charging counties lands higher, and the final figure only appears on the invoice.

Checkr does publish an estimator that takes a package, add-ons and locations. Run it against a typical candidate before you commit a hiring budget, the way you would price payroll and team tools up front.

What the public reviews say, and who is writing them

Checkr's Trustpilot profile showed a TrustScore of 3.9 out of 5, rated "Great," when we read it on November 3, 2026.

The spread matters more than the average. Of the twenty most recent reviews visible on that profile that day, four were positive; the rest were complaints, each answered individually by a named Checkr support account.

Most of those writers are candidates, not customers. They are people whose job or gig stalled behind a report, which is a different experience from the employer paying the invoice.

Two themes repeat and are worth testing against your own use: how disputes are handled when a record is wrong, and pricing surprises. One recent review title on the profile reads: "Starting from $29.99" became $49.99.

We could not read the two largest software review sites. G2 returned HTTP 403 and Capterra returned a bot-verification page to our requests on November 3, 2026.

Where an independent rating is missing here, it is missing because the source would not open, not because it was left out. We applied the same rule in our Tenable review.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Checkr cost per background check?

Basic is $29.99, Essential $59.99 and Complete $94.99 per report, all labelled "Starting from" and all before third-party court and database access fees, per the pricing page checked November 3, 2026. Enterprise is quoted by sales.

Does Checkr have a free trial or a free plan for employers?

No employer free tier is published. The only free product is a Personal Checkr Profile for individuals, covering identity verification, a sex offender registry check and a national criminal search, checked November 3, 2026.

Is there a contract or minimum with Checkr?

The small-business page advertises pay-as-you-go with "no contracts or minimums." The services agreement runs one year from the effective date and renews annually. Accounts without a signed Order are charged per report instead.

How long does a Checkr background check take?

Checkr publishes no guaranteed turnaround. Its own background check page states the average with a consumer reporting agency is three to five days, and that driving records average under an hour online, checked November 3, 2026.

What does the $29.99 package leave out?

Basic excludes county criminal search, state criminal search, federal criminal search and identity verification. County search starts with Essential at $59.99 per report, per the pricing page checked November 3, 2026.

Is Checkr worth it for a small business in 2026?

For employers screening drivers, in-home staff or hourly workers at volume, the per-report model with no signup minimum is hard to beat. For a team making two hires a year, a single-county check elsewhere may do the same job for less.

Bottom line

Checkr publishes more of its price list than most background check vendors, and the self-serve path genuinely works without talking to sales first.

The catch is not the package price. It is that the package price is a floor: add-ons, passthrough court fees and drug testing all stack above it, and the total only resolves on the invoice.

So do two things before you open an account. Run the passthrough estimator against a typical candidate, and read the services agreement rather than the small-business page.
